Spider Veins

Spider veins are small purple to red blood vessels often visible on the leg, ankle or foot. Occasionally, spider veins will appear on the face. They are identified by their small blue, red, or purple appearance that looks similar to a spiderweb.  These veins are often found on the areas such as:

  • Thighs
  • Ankles
  • Feet
  • Face
  • Nose

Other veins called reticular veins will sometimes accompany spider veins.  They should be treated at the same time for best results. Spider veins are progressive and usually increase in number and visibility with age. At Aesthetic Plastic Surgery and Skin Care Center, we use laser treatments that are highly effective in eliminating spider veins.

Spider Veins: What causes them to appear?

Heredity plays a strong role in the development of spider veins. They should not be confused with varicose veins, the larger, darker veins that often appear because of abnormal blood circulation.

Varicose veins may cause discomfort in the legs, while spider veins are usually painless. If left untreated, spider veins will usually increase in number and become more visible as you get older.

Spider Vein Treatment: What’s involved?

We use a highly effective laser treatment for treating spider veins. The laser ablates the vein, causing it to close and gradually disappear. Laser vein treatment is often combined with sclerotherapy, a technique that injects a sclerosing (hardening of tissue) agent into the vein.
