Rhinoplasty is what most people call a “nose job.” The purpose of this procedure is to enhance the proportions of the nose and when necessary, improve functionality.
Rhinoplasty: Who can benefit?
Many people are simply born with a nose shape that they perceive as undesirable. Others experience an injury that causes the nose to become misshaped. Cosmetic reasons for rhinoplasty may include the following:
- Abnormal nostril pattern
- Bump nose
- Hook nose
- Nose asymmetry
Functional abnormalities that restrict breathing can also be corrected through rhinoplasty.
Rhinoplasty: How Surgery Improves a Nose
There are several techniques in rhinoplasty, but the basics procedures include a small incision inside (or outside) your nose that allows a plastic surgeon to reshape the underlying cartilage and bone. While surgical skill is crucial, your surgeon needs to have an eye for aesthetics as well. The nose should look natural and maintain proportion with the rest of your facial features.
After Rhinoplasty: What to Expect
Patients will experience difficulty breathing through the nose for about 3 days. Gauze will be inside the nose to reduce swelling and bleeding after surgery. Certain activities will need to be avoided in order to prevent disruption of the healing process.
It may take quite a while for the results of your rhinoplasty to be appreciated, but the cosmetic improvements are usually very satisfying once recovery is complete. Contact Dr. Genter’s office in Philadelphia County for more information on rhinoplasty.
