Laser Hair Removal

We currently offer laser-assisted hair removal for patients in Bucks County, Montgomery County and Philadelphia.

Laser-assisted hair removal is great for those who have grown tired of shaving, waxing, electrolysis, and other hair removal methods.  This treatment is often very satisfying because it gets long-term results.

There are several reasons people pursue laser hair removal:

    • Hair removal for cosmetic reasons
    • Hair removal for medical or therapeutic reasons
    • Hirsutism (abnormal hair growth)

Laser Hair Removal: How to Prepare

Patients should decide to stop waxing, plucking, electrolysis, or thermolysis once they begin the process of long-term laser assisted hair removal. Sunbathing should also be postponed during the treatment process. It also may help to use broadband sunscreen to reduce skin pigment and the chance of laser erythema. Hair length at the time of treatment should be around 1-5 mm and the treatment area should be completely clean.

The Hair Removal Procedure

Although this treatment is a relatively comfortable process, some patients opt for a topical anesthetic. Eye protection is provided for the patient and the process begins. A hand piece that emits laser energy to the skin is applied to the treatment areas in a uniform, sometimes overlapping, pattern. The laser energy targets the pigment of the hair follicle, damages it and deactivates it. Treated areas may be cooled afterward with ice packs or cryogen spray.

How many treatments are necessary?

Because some hairs are not in the growth phase during treatment, it is necessary to undergo several treatments for the best, long-term results. The first treatment will typically produce an 80 percent hair reduction. The number of subsequent treatments will vary for each patient.

Who should not pursue laser hair removal?

Although it was recommended in the past that only certain skin types get laser hair removal, the latest advancements in laser technology have allowed more patients than ever before to benefit from this treatment. However, there are certain contraindications that should be considered on an individual basis:
Presence of keloid or keloid tendency
Presence of photo-aggravated skin disease
Cuts or injury on or near the treatment area
Medications that cause sensitivity to light
Other skin conditions such as vitiligo, psoriasis, or hsv
