IPL - Intelligent Pulsed Light

IPL has also been called "intense-pulsed light."  This photofacial treatment selectively removes dark lesions and age spots with ultra-precise wavelengths of light.

IPL: Who can benefit?

Patients with different forms of skin coloration can often benefit from treatment with IPL.  Those with fair skin are the best candidates.  IPL is typically used to treat the following skin conditions:

  • Uneven skin tone
  • Port wine stains
  • Broken capillaries
  • Vascular birthmarks
  • Fine lines
  • Red or brown pigmentation/discoloration

IPL: How Does it Work?

Intense pulsed light treatment selectively damages underlying blood vessels and melanin, prompting your body’s healing response to gradually remove discoloration and produce a healthier complexion.

Treatment takes about 45 minutes.  Pulses of light are applied in a uniform pattern on your skin.  We often recommend a series of IPL treatments for best results.

After IPL Treatment: What to Expect

You should be able to return to your normal routine right away.  You might exhibit some mild redness, but makeup can help conceal it.

There are side effects that are possible with IPL.  With proper settings, the risk for these side effects is minimal.  Hyperpigmentation, hypopigmentation, swelling and blistering has been documented after studies of IPL treatment.
