Dr. Genter Discusses Men’s Cosmetic Needs with ABC News

philadelphia botox liposuctionAs more men turn to cosmetic procedures, what special considerations do their plastic surgeons make?

Philadelphia plastic surgeon Dr. Bruce Genter has seen many male patients and told ABC News what he sees as the needs for men who choose cosmetic treatments.

For men who undergo liposuction, which is the top cosmetic surgery for men, according to ABC News, incisions cannot be made in the same manner or location they would for women in case the male patient wishes to go shirtless, Genter said.

When it comes to brow or facelifts, incisions cannot always be easily hidden in the hairline as they usually can on women, if the man is balding. Additionally, men who have facial hair or sideburns must receive special attention from their plastic surgeon to ensure the location of the facial hair remains natural, Genter said. Finally, as most men do not wear makeup, any surgical scars or post-surgery swelling may be somewhat more difficult to conceal.

Even with these added hurdles, men are increasingly turning to Dr. Genter and his contemporaries for treatments like Botox and dermal fillers, as well as procedures like eyelid surgery, to stay competitive in the job market.

Other popular procedures for men include male breast reduction, the range of facial rejuvenation procedures, as well as non-surgical options like chemical peels and skin resurfacing treatments.

Blepharoplasty May Help Those with Facial Paralysis

philadelphia eyelid surgery blepharoplastyRelief for individuals who struggle with facial paralysis around the eyes may be imminent, according to the Archives of Facial Plastic Surgery.

Often, these individuals are unable to completely close their eyes and suffer from dry, irritated eyes. Using pre- and post-operative assessments on nearly 40 of these individuals, researchers at the Harvard Medical School and the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary found that patients had significantly improved quality of life after surgical intervention. To correct the issue, surgery may have included a weight placed within the upper eyelid or suspension of the lower lid.

Another popular procedure that showed a marked improvement in the patients’ quality of life was eyelid surgery or blepharoplasty, which corrects a descending brow. This surgery removes excess skin around the eye and improves the area cosmetically, as well.

Eyelid surgery, as well as the other surgical interventions not only improved the patients’ quality of life, but also had a positive effect on their long-term vision and health. Without proper protection for the cornea, it can become inflamed and may lead to vision loss, according to the researchers.
