Over 90% of ASPS Plastic Surgeons Are Satisfied in Their Careers

Friday, July 30th, 2010 by copywriter

A new study appearing in the next issue of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery looks at the career satisfaction of plastic surgeons.  According to results of a previous study, there’s a link between high quality care and the physician’s satisfaction in his or her job.  Obtaining these statistics can therefore give us a general picture of the “health” of the profession in America and how that affects the care you receive.

The authors mailed a survey to 708 doctors who are members of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, half of them male and the other half female.  They asked several questions about career satisfaction such as:

  • Was a career in plastic surgery the right choice?
  • Would you choose this career again if you had to do it over again?

Other questions inquired about income, switching specialties and retiring early.  The results are very positive, i.e. it appears that plastic surgery is a generally satisfying career in the United States.  93 percent of respondents said it was the right career choice and 78 percent said they would make the choice again if they had to.  Only a small percentage said they regretted the choice to become a plastic surgeon.

The most interesting outcomes of the survey were 1) the data regarding differences in satisfaction between surgeons who are “intellectually isolated” and those who are actively involved with their colleagues, and 2) the difference in satisfaction between surgeons who are focused primarily on reconstructive surgery and those who “balanced” their focus between reconstructive and cosmetic operations.

The study is published online ahead of print and you can access it through the journal’s website.

The Advantages of Good Looks: How Far Do They Go?

Friday, July 23rd, 2010 by copywriter

Newsweek.com just published “The Beauty Advantage,” a special report that explores the pursuit of good looks and the advantages attractive people may have in the workplace and in other areas of life.

Although many of us believe that we judge people purely on their personality, character, or competence in the workplace, there may be other biases at work, the report suggests. “Looking good is no longer something we can ignore or dismiss as frivolous or vain,” argues reporter Jessica Bennet.

If society were not biased in favor of attractive people, would these statistics be true?

  • “A good-looking man will make some $250,000 more than his least-attractive counterpart, according to economist Daniel Hamermesh.”
  • “Fifty-seven percent of hiring managers told Newsweek that qualified but unattractive candidates are likely to have a harder time landing a job.”
  • “More than half of those hiring managers advised spending as much time and money on “making sure they look attractive” as on perfecting a résumé.”

More surprising statistics are cited throughout the report, but what’s more interesting are the biological and psychological explanations for the beauty advantage.  Is our bias an appreciation of the Platonic ideal form?  Are we unconsciously surrounding ourselves with attractive people in order to produce healthy offspring?  It’s unlikely that a single answer can satisfy our curiosity on this topic.

For many people in our generation, it comes down to an individual choice: how far will you go in your pursuit of beauty?  In the continuum of choices you can make to change your appearance, it’s not always clear where to draw the line.  Many people are quite satisfied with little more than a stylish wardrobe or haircut, but not every person begins their pursuit with the same beauty advantage.

Motivating Factors for Plastic Surgery: Some Complex and Some Simple

Wednesday, May 26th, 2010 by copywriter

The latest issue of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery includes a study about lifestyle factors that are correlated with interest in specific cosmetic procedures.

The authors of the study claim there are physical, social and psychological factors that can predict interest in procedures such as:

1862 participants responded to a survey.  The respondents who were interested in rhinoplasty, breast augmentation, and liposuction were motivated by “complex psychological factors.”   Doctors noted lifestyle factors such as divorce, history of teasing, education, self-image, body dysmorphic disorder, and the so-called Big-Five personality traits.

For other respondents, motivating factors appeared relatively simple.  Those who reported interest in abdominoplasty were interested in it exclusively. They generally mention a desire to repair the bodily changes occurring after childbirth.

Scientists Solve Problem of Stem Cell Fragility

Monday, April 19th, 2010 by copywriter

Scientists working with the Scripps Research Institute say they have solved the problem of stem cell fragility, a major hurdle that has long-hindered the progress of stem cell research.

During the culture process, stem cells frequently die unless scientists take very meticulous, labor-intensive steps to keep them alive.  By introducing two compounds called Thiazovivin and Pyrintegrin, the cells are protected, increasing their survival rate significantly.

Developments in stem cell research, though a subject of debate, offer hope for revolutionary therapeutic purposes, including treatment of injuries, diabetes, Parkinson’s disease, and aging.   The regenerative properties of pluripotent stem cells could facilitate tissue repair in a variety of applications – even cosmetic treatments.

Discussing the Relation Between Weight Gain and Aging

Monday, February 22nd, 2010 by copywriter

This morning on National Public Radio was a discussion about weight gain and the aging process. Why do we seem to gain weight easier as we get older?

The program focuses on physical fitness and why that is so important during your later years.  They say fitness is important because 1) muscle mass decreases with age (the percentage of muscle drops in your body) and 2) muscle repair becomes slower.  Muscle plays a critical role in burning calories, which as you know affects your weight, health and appearance.

Surgery After Weight Loss

Friday, October 30th, 2009 by admin

The benefits of weight loss with or without surgical assistance (gastric bypass, gastric banding) are beyond doubt.  The problem of the remaining extra stretched skin remains long after the pounds are shed.

Post-bariatric surgery (surgery after weight loss) is the newest field in plastic surgery.  This surgery addresses the extra skin of the abdomen, back, thighs, arms, and breasts with artful surgical removal to best enhance the new lean body now hidden by folds of extra skin.

A variety of operations address the various areas of the body:  brachioplasty (arm lifts), mastopexy (breast lifts), breast reductions, abdominoplasty (tummy tucks), circumferential belt lipectomy to address the abdomen and lower back, body lift for the buttock, thighs, and back; and thigh lifts to tighten the thighs.  Facelifts are often used to treat redundant skin of the face and neck left after weight loss.  Even more interesting, some of the excess skin that would normally be removed can be used for auto-augmentation (augmentation using your own tissues) of the buttocks and breasts.  All of these techniques must be customized to treat each patient’s individual needs and priorities.

I began performing  these post-weight loss operations more than 15 years ago, when surgery to treat massive weight loss was risky and rare.  Newer techniques have made this a much safer procedure and, therefore more common.  Also, better understanding of nutrition and exercise has helped many people lose weight without surgery and has also helped people maintain excellent health after massive weight loss.

I would enjoy hearing about the experiences of my blog readers and I would be happy to answer your questions.

To Finance or Not: That is the question!

Wednesday, May 27th, 2009 by Jessica Hoffman

The companies are out there… If you are determined, have decent (at least 650) credit score, someone, somewhere out there, can make it happen. for…. Cosmetic Surgery?

What is this world coming to? I mean, it’s a wonderful thing… to have the ability to offer patients 0% interest, 18 month financing… it costs us a pretty penny, but at least our patients have options… lots of them. The companies we use offer everything from 3-18 month interest free plans… all the way to 60 month long-term payment plans. (with high interest)- but if someone wants a procedure, this seems logical. Let’s think about what we finance… and don’t really put much thought into….
1. Education- From the day we are born, first our parents.. they pay- they pay for preschool, primary, etc. tutors, instruction, (dance, ballet, art, guitar, Lacrosse, acting, teen tour)

Economy drives change in the cosmetic surgery industry

Friday, January 9th, 2009 by Jessica Hoffman

No industry has been immune to the impact of today’s economy. The Aesthetics industry has had to get creative. Bruce Genter, M.D., F.A.C.S. has noticed a significant increase in non-invasive and non-surgical procedures.

Jessica Hoffman, Practice Director at Aesthetic Plastic Surgery and Skin Care Center said “the job market is very competitive, people are scared. With the combination of financing, decreased pricing (which we have been almost forced to do) and a wider range of services available, it becomes very realistic to give yourself a boost, go into that interview with an edge and just feel good all around.”

Procedures such as a non-surgical nose job, shaping using injectable fillers takes about ten minutes, zero down-time, produce immediate results and cost a fraction of what a surgical Rhinoplasty would be. Other services such as skin-care, (micro peels, laser treatments, etc) Botox and fillers are used to accomplish a very broad range of results from simply filling in the little lines around your mouth, to a completely different look.

Dr Genter offers financing with programs that range from interest free to 48 month extended plans. The Aesthetic Plastic Surgery and Skin Care Center is located at The Colonade, 100 Old York Road Jenkintown PA 19046. Dr. Genter received his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania and completed his Plastic Surgery residency at Yale University Medical Center.
