Breast Lift

A breast lift (also known as mastopexy) is a surgery that raises and reshapes sagging breasts. The procedure may also include reducing the size of the areola. During the same surgery, the breast lift can be combined with breast augmentation using saline or silicone implants to restore breast volume.

Breast Lift Surgery: Why Is It Performed?

Over time, the effects of gravity along with the natural loss of the skin’s natural elasticity begin to have a negative effect on the appearance of a woman’s breasts. These factors combined with pregnancies and nursing will often cause the breasts to lose their youthful shape and fullness. For some women, this may occur at a relatively young age because of genetics and other factors.

Breast Lift Techniques and Procedures

Traditionally, a breast lift requires 3 incisions that form an anchor shape: one around the areola, one vertical incision from the bottom edge of the areola to the crease under the breast, and one incision in the natural curve of the breast crease.

Other techniques may involve a lollipop shaped incision. Skin and tissue is removed as necessary and glandular tissue is excised and sutured to produce a shapelier breast that sits higher on the chest.

The general goal is to restore the youthful position of your breasts while minimizing scars as much as possible. The procedure generally takes about 1.5 – 3 hours.

After Breast Lift Surgery: What to Expect

Recovery time is about 7-14 days, during which time patients are instructed to wear a special surgical bra. Movement will need to be limited during this time to ensure proper healing. Strenuous physical activity should be limited for at least 4 weeks.  Medications are prescribed to minimize discomfort during your recovery.
